The electric vehicle sector is gaining exciting momentum across Africa. Promising developments are emerging in several countries on the continent. In Ethiopia, a complete ban on importing fully built internal combustion engine (ICE) cars has led to a remarkable surge in electric vehicles on the road. In Senegal, a pioneering fully electric rapid bus transit system is now operational. Many nations are also actively encouraging the adoption of electric buses.

Currently, over 90% of vehicles imported into most African countries are used vehicles. As the availability of pre-owned electric vehicles increases in Europe, China, and the United States, more used EVs are now making their way to markets in West, East, Central, and Southern Africa.

Right now, one of the most talkedabout trends in Africa is the rapid growth of the electric motorcycle industry. Motorcycles play a vital role across much of the continent, especially as taxis. Close to 30 million motorcycles in Africa are used for ridehailing services, and nearly 99% of them still run on internal combustion engines. This presents a massive opportunityand a vast addressable marketfor electrification.

The shift toward electric vehicles in Africa, particularly in the electric motorcycle space, has been led largely by the private sector, with many small startups at the forefront. These companies deserve recognition and support as they break new ground and make significant progress in a challenging environment.

Exciting news is emerging from Kenya, a key market in Africas electric mobility transition. Electric motorcycle registrations saw strong growth in 2025, building on a breakthrough year in 2024.

To put this momentum in perspective: in 2023, electric models accounted for 3.6%or roughly 4%of total motorcycle sales in Kenya. Adoption had already been climbing steadily, rising from 0.5% in 2021 to 2.8% in 2022, then reaching 3.6% in 2023. Many analysts view the 5% threshold as a tipping point toward mass adoptiona mark Kenya not only reached but surpassed in 2024.

According to the KNBS Economic Survey Report (2025), 68,804 new motorcycles were registered in Kenya in 2024. Data from the Electric Mobility Association of Kenya (EMAK) shows that 4,862 of these were electric, translating to a market share of 7.1%clear evidence that electric twowheelers are accelerating into the mainstream.

The momentum continued impressively in 2025, with electric motorcycles capturing a remarkable 15.3% market share. This achievement is especially striking considering that just eight years ago, only 44 electric motorcycles were registered across the entire country.

The overall motorcycle market also expanded dramatically, growing 145% from 68,804 registrations in 2024 to 168,286 in 2025. Of these, 25,277 were electric, meaning 15.3% of all new motorcycles registered in Kenya last year were electrica truly impressive leap.

With over 2 million internal combustion engine motorcycles still on Kenyan roads, the potential for electrifying the sector remains enormous. The 145% surge in total motorcycle sales signals a recovering market after recent slowdowns. Given the rising interest and awareness around electric models, now is the time to back the companies active in Kenyas electric motorcycle space and capitalize on this powerful momentum.
